Traffic Display

The Traffic Display is the main user interface for a VTS or Coastal Surveillance System. It presents the traffic situation to the VTS Operators so that they can base their decision making on factual and accurate real time information. The Traffic Display uses accurate Electronic Navigation Chart data as the background for the real time traffic information and may be presented in either 2D or 3D. The Traffic Display presents a single representation of each tracked vessel regardless of the number of sensors that may be tracking it. The tracked targets are presented overlaid on the Electronic Chart based presentation of the VTS area to enable risk areas to be identified and, where appropriate, for special zones to be established for close monitoring of vessel activity within or around such zones.

Traffic Display functionality will normally include various facilities to provide alerts and warnings to the VTS Operator regarding situations where risks have increased due to the behaviour of certain vessels. These may include speed alarms within fairways or warnings that a vessel is outside the prescribed fairway zone.

Decision Support

A Decision Support capability is intended to assist users in making the right decisions about evolving operational scenarios and could also assist policy makers in setting the right procedures for the VTS as a whole.
